December is dumpling season, is it not? Once it gets cold, I could gobble them down nonstop – and adding some chili oil is just an extra way to warm the belly (and the soul). On a recent afternoon hopping around the West Village, I stopped in Lin & Daughters for a late afternoon snack. One order will set you back less than $15 and is made to order so you get piping hot dumplings made just for you.

The shop is small but bright. It didn’t feel overly serious or corporate, just a sunny space to pop in for a chill lunch.

I went with the pork and chive dumpling’s because they seemed like the shop’s most classic flavor. The wrappers were thick enough that you still get that comfort of eating noodles, but thin enough that the flavor of the filling really stands out – and it was properly filled. None of that overly starchy nonsense at the crimped section. The flavor of the chives shined through and the dumpling sauce, with just the right amount of vinegar, was a perfect accompaniment. If they’re any indication of the rest of the menu, I need to get back to try more.
